This is the village centre: not much to see here and the name 'High Street' may seem pretentious. But the road is on the route of a Roman one, and 'High Street' often seems to have been used for such routes.

Miners' wheel, High Street, New Sharlston
Many villages in the Yorkshire coalfield have half a winding wheel as a memorial to those who worked (and all often died) in the mines. New Sharlston Colliery closed as recently as 1993 and the site to the north-east of the village has reverted to agriculture. See also Image

Sharlston Colliery Wheel.
This wheel is on the roadside near the junction of High Street and Cow Lane, the only monument to the now long gone colliery which for over 100 years dominated the village.
