The Old Alehouse
Now a smart looking residence. The only reference I can find to this states that a beerhouse existed in this road, (Greenside) and was frequented by canal navvies. The house fell into disrepute.

GPO cable marker
A concrete relic from the past - when the GPO ran both the Post Office and the telephone system. The metal plaque which would have shown the depth to the underground cable is missing. The arrow shows that the GPO was a government department.

Eastern railway bridge, School Lane, Walton
Walton railway station (originally called Oakenshaw, later Sandal and Walton from 1870 to 1951) was off to the left here. It closed in 1961 and most of the site is now occupied by housing). The further of the two bridges is the older one, opened in 1840 by the North Midland Railway. It no longer carries any tracks. The second bridge is a steel one added some time in the 20th century, and still carries a freight line to a glassworks at Monk Bretton.

The nearer of the two bridges, a brick arch with a clearance of 14ft, is the older one, opened in 1840 by the North Midland Railway. It no longer carries any tracks. The further bridge is a steel one added some time in the 20th century, and still carries a freight line to a glassworks at Monk Bretton.
