Plaque on former school, Victoria Street, Heckmondwike
The rectangular part was taken from Heckmondwike Town Schools, which were erected on the green in 1809 and demolished in 1875, when this, the Victoria Infants' School, was built. The Latin text, in italics at the bottom, has been translated as: “Let nothing base be said or done in the place where there is a child”.

Disused railway bridge, Victoria Street, Heckmondwike
This railway, the 'new line' to Leeds' was not constructed until the 1890s, and expensive engineering work was needed to skirt round the top side of the town centre, including a deep cutting and several bridges to carry the residential streets. It is intended that the line should become a cycleway, and it is to be hoped that this will curb the tipping of rubbish into the cutting.

Heckmondwicke cutting-The Leeds new line
This overgrown railway cutting in Heckmondwike,Yorkshire was on the L.N.W.R Heaton Lodge - Farnley Junction Leeds (Leeds New Line) The line was opened in 1900 and closed in 1965. There are a total of 6 overbridges, and the 50 yd Cook lane tunnel in this short section of cutting. This section of line is between Heckmondwicke, and Liversedge stations, It remained in use between Heckmondwike Spen goods yard, and the oil terminal at Liversedge until 1986. Charrington Hargreaves oil terminal was at the former Liversedge Spen Goods Yard. The terminal was mothballed in 1986. The building of the Leeds New line involved a tremendous amount of earth works. Bridge arches in the Heckmondwike Cutting
This is the eastern end of the part of the cutting that has so far been converted into a cycleway. The information board gives the history of the railway line - the Leeds New Line. It was opened by the London and North-western Railway on 1st October 1900. The purpose was to provide extra capacity between Huddersfield and Leeds. However it was not very successful. Passenger services ended in 1953, and the line became disused in 1986 and the track lifted in 1995. There are nine bridges and two tunnels in the cutting, over a length of about 500m. 126 houses were demolished. 80 houses in Francis Street and Powell Street were built to rehouse many of the displaced occupants.
