Holy Spirit RC Church, Bath Road, Heckmondwike
A Roman Catholic Chapel and school was established in Heckmondwike in 1873. This church was opened in 1915.

Heckmondwike Spen railway station (site), Yorkshire
Opened in 1900 by the London & North Western Railway on their Spen Valley "New" line from Huddersfield to Leeds, this station closed to passengers in 1953 and completely in 1964.
View north towards Liversedge Spen and Leeds. The site is now covered by private housing but the line (now a footpath) continues beyond the buildings.

Bridge arches in the Heckmondwike Cutting
This is the eastern end of the part of the cutting that has so far been converted into a cycleway. The information board gives the history of the railway line - the Leeds New Line. It was opened by the London and North-western Railway on 1st October 1900. The purpose was to provide extra capacity between Huddersfield and Leeds. However it was not very successful. Passenger services ended in 1953, and the line became disused in 1986 and the track lifted in 1995. There are nine bridges and two tunnels in the cutting, over a length of about 500m. 126 houses were demolished. 80 houses in Francis Street and Powell Street were built to rehouse many of the displaced occupants.
