Heath conservation village - The Dower House
A grade II* listed former dower house, now house. Constructed c1740 in Ashlar with a Westmorland green-slate roof, with early C19 extension in matching style for the Smyth's of nearby Heath Hall.

The Dower House, Heath
This is one of several large houses around Heath Common. Presumably it was an attractive place for the wealthy people of Wakefield to set up home. The faint shadow across the grass is presumably what remains of the haha, made to keep animals grazing on the common out of the garden.

Built c.1740 for the Smyth family of Heath Hall. Originally symmetrical of 5 bays, the left hand wing added in the early 19th century. Listed Grade II*. The ha-ha in the foreground with its attached gatepier is separately Listed Grade II, see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5832524 .

The Dower House
The symmetry of the original house, which dates from the 1740s, has been disturbed by the addition of a wing in the 19th century, though at least the wing matches the older masonry. See https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101135585-the-dower-house-warmfield-cum-heath for further details.

Heath conservation village - Dower House sundial
A grade II listed sundial to front of The Dower House. Mid C18, probably contemporary with the Dower House. Ashlar with square base, carved console to each side, frieze decorated with egg-and-dart ornament, notched corners. The top has a circular recess for the dial plate, (missing).

Sundial at the Dower House, Heath
Listed Grade II as mid 18th century, although the condition of the stonework suggests a modern restoration. The dial itself was already missing when it was listed in 1986. See http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5832521 for location.

Garden wall at the Dower House, Heath
The ground to the right of the wall was part of the walled garden, to which the gate gave access, until the modern driveway to buildings at the rear was built. The garden still exists behind the hedge to the right. The wall and gate are Listed Grade II.

Heath conservation village - Dower House ha-ha
A Grade II listed ha-ha and gate piers to south front of the Dower House. Constructed mid C18. in Hammer-dressed stone and ashlar and the corners have spiked metal straps to discourage cattle from using them as rubbing posts.
In landscape-gardening, the ha-ha is a boundary to a garden designed not to interrupt a view from e.g. a country-house. It consists of a ditch with side nearest the viewpoint perpendicular faced with brick or stone, and the other side sloped and turfed. It kept animals away from the gardens, yet was concealed.
