Wakefield Chantry Chapel
The Chantry Chapel on Wakefield's ancient bridge was built during the 14th century for travellers to pray for safe journeys. It was restored in Victorian times but owes its survival to its foundations being an integral part of the medieval bridge. It has several other beautiful windows.

The west front of the Chantry Chapel, Bridge Street, Wakefield
– This chapel was built c.1356 on a new toll bridge that was constructed some time after 1342. The chapel was repaired when the bridge was widened to its present width in 1797-8. By 1840 it was in need of restoration, and the repairs were rather drastic; in 1847-8 the chapel was demolished down to road level and rebuilt in new stone. Prior to this the building was let out for commercial use; the last tenant was a tailor. After restoration it was used as the church for the new parish of St Mary's, until St Mary's at Primrose Hill was built. The stone used in the rebuilding was badly affected by polluted air, and the west front had to be renewed again in 1940. Further repairs have been carried since then; there are some very new-looking statues at the top.

The Old Cut turns green

Wakefield Bridge and the Chantry Chapel
The bridge is now closed to traffic, having been replaced by a modern bridge on the other side.
The spire of Wakefield Cathedral can be seen behind the lamppost in the centre.

The Old Cut, on the north side of Stennard Island
The original Wakefield terminus of the Aire & Calder Navigation, before Fall Ing Cut was created to by-pass Chantry Bridge. Unusually, and because of recent flooding, water is flowing down the cut.
