Milepost opposite No 34, Aberford Road
A grade II listed,(and listing), milepost of the late C19. The post marks the route of the Wakefield and Aberford Turnpike road which was created 1788/9.
On the head it reads:- WAKEFIELD & ABERFORD ROAD WAKEFIELD
On the left side :- ABERFORD 12 MILES, OULTON 4 MILES.
On the right side:- WAKEFIELD 1 MILE
In the West Riding area, in the late C19, the County Council replaced most of the turnpike milestones with cast-iron ones of triangular section on a stone post. Many were manufactured at Brayshaw and Booth’s foundry in Liversedge, and this milestone bears their details on the hip.

Old Milestone by the A642, Aberford Road, Wakefield parish
Metal plate attached to stone post by the A642, in parish of WAKEFIELD (WAKEFIELD District), Aberford Road; opposite No.34, on perimeter of Pinderfields Hospital, under hedge, near bus stop, on West side of road. Brayshaw & Booth iron casting, erected by the County Council in the 19th century.
Inscription reads:-

Old milestone
This milestone was one of 615 set up by the West Riding County Council in 1893/4.
About 350 are still by the roadside all over the old West Riding even though parts are now in Cumbria and Greater Manchester. It is on the A642 and is Grade II listed. For many years it had a very little paint on it. I have just finished the repainting to the standard set by the authorities in Wakefield.
