The Cowshed Restaurant, 53,Northgate
Parts of this grade II dual listed building date back to 1596. The interior retains some timber framing, including chamfered oak beams and joists. The ground floor has the remains of a moulded stone fireplace. The upper floor retains an oak panelled frieze and an elaborate Elizabethan plaster ceiling which contains the Garter Arms of Elizabeth I. There is also a complete fireplace. The Gate won the ‘Overall Best Bar None Venue’ in 2007. The aim of 'Best Bar None' is to identify those venues who have demonstrated to the Police, Fire Service and Trading Standards Service that they have established responsible and innovative policies focused on customer care and safety.

The back of The Cow Shed
The bland exterior of the building conceals the fact that it includes part of a late 15th century timber framed building, and further interior detailing from the late Elizabethan period. Not an obvious candidate from the outside to be Listed Grade II*.
