Most of the post-war buildings in the city centre are fairly bland, but this one is more assertive due to its massing, and recessions and projections. It housed a branch of Boots, Thomas Cook, Ladbrokes and several others.

This is in fact the reciprocal view of Image The spire draws the eye nicely away from the phalaxes of wheelie bins.

Crowds outside the cathedral, at the junction of Northgate and Little Westgate. Part of an outdoor theatrical performance called 'The Hatchling' - centred on a large human-operated dragon puppet, produced by a company called Trigger. The weekend-long event was organised by Wakefield Council.

The German Christmas market set up in the Bull Ring and Cathedral precinct on 19th Nov. was ordered by Wakefield council to pack up and leave by the 10th Dec. as it was not up to scratch. Only 30 of the 60 expected stalls materialised, and residents had claimed it was “a disappointment”, had “no atmosphere” and lacked German goods and entertainment.

Noel Gay (1898-1954), born Reginald Armitage, was best known as a lyricist and popular-song writer. His early training was as a chorister at Wakefield Cathedral. He won a scholarship, from Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, to the Royal College of Music and became assistant organist at the Chapel Royal, St James’ Palace. Later, at Cambridge, he discovered his talent for popular songs. He wrote the music, and sometimes the words, for a number of revues and musical comedies, including the 1937 musical, Me and My Girl, which includes his Lambeth Walk.
