Saxon Way
An estate of prefabricated houses built around 1970, overlooking Wheldale Colliery, which began going downhill within a decade when the sons of the miners started moving direct from school to the dole queue. Beset by the consequent social problems, by the late 1980s no-one wanted to live there and it was demolished in the early 1990s.

Bus turning circle, Pemberton Road, Airedale
Properly on the edge of everything, this turning circle does not even rate a bus stop, as I found to my surprise when the driver would not let me off here. Just beyond here, Pemberton Road is blocked, preventing through traffic.

Wheldale Colliery, Castleford: "the sunshine pit"
Wheldale Colliery was the first pit to open in Castleford and the last to close, (not including Allerton Bywater just north of the town boundary). It apparently got its nickname "the sunshine pit" because if the sun shone the men went home. I worked there between 1974 to 1978 and had several of these "sunshine breaks" during that time. I can't remember when photo taken so date just a guess.

On a clear day this statuesque couple can see as far as Ilkley Moor and the Pennines beyond Huddersfield from their vantage point in the highest part of Queens Park.

Wheldale Colliery memorial cross
The colliery is long gone and all that is left is a gas generating plant, the obligatory half a winding wheel and, most importantly, the memorial cross to the men who where killed in the pit and others that left to fight and die in the war. All photo dates are approximate. Images scanned from existing photos.
