The Sandy Desert
This often-flooded riverside field earned its ironic nickname in the 1920s when Castleford rugby league club played there, before their move to Wheldon Road. Now used by Lock Lane ARLFC. Disused Hicksons chemical works in background.

Trash torrent
A continuous stream of rubbish flows down the river Aire and over Castleford weir, washed into the water by torrential rain farther upstream. Twigs, branches, plastic bottles and footballs by the dozen: later in the day an electric cooker came over the weir.
