See Image The metal plate is an aperture restrictor plate. It's designed so that only thin items can be posted in the box. These have their origins in the Northern Ireland Troubles and were designed to prevent packages containing explosives from being posted. Hence they were nicknamed "Belfast Slits". Today they are often deployed to prevent drug users from posting syringes etc.
