43 King Street
A rather fabulous Baroque work of Thomas Archer, an attribution based on stylistic grounds rather than documentary evidence. Built in 1716-17 for Admiral Russell, the 1st Earl of Orford. As is the case for most of Archer's designs, the building has since been altered. The attic storey and urns replaced a ramped-up parapet (à la Chicheley Hall) in 1871. Grade II* listed.
It has recently been restored, following a previous bout in the late 1970s, and may now be in use as offices and flats.
