2-10 Tavistock Street
By Edwin Lutyens, 1904-05, for Country Life in what is generally referred to as "Hampton Court Wrenaissance" style (e.g. see Image]). Grade II* listed.
Country Life has departed, but the building's name, Hudson House, is a reference to its then owner, and now provides serviced offices.

Strand Palace Hotel - steam engine
It's easy to forget that big hotels have big infrastructure and this hotel once generated appreciable quantities of DC electricity. This is a 1927 Belliss & Morcom inverted vertical triple expansion steam engine. It was rated at 430/440 brake horsepower at 350 rpm. Although long disused it is possibly still in the powerhouse in a basement between Exeter Street and Tavistock Street. The site also had water-tube boilers similar to those used in WWII naval vessels.

Strand Palace Hotel - air conditioning compressor
When I first visited this site I found two of these side by side. They were built by a company called Carrier and in my ignorance I thought they were steam turbine generating sets. Several years later I knew better and identified them correctly as motor driven air-conditioning/refrigeration compressors.

20 Tavistock Street
Turning the corner into Burleigh Street is a solid piece by Charles Gray, 1859-60. It has polychrome-tiled metopes (Image]). Grade II listed.
Occupied by Bravissimo, which specialises in "lingerie, swimwear and clothing for women who are a D-L cup".
