Crossley diesel, Old Quay Swing Bridge
One of two driving hydraulic pressure pumps. Seeing one of these run was a real treat.

Power for Old Quay swing bridge
This is the original water hydraulic power plant. In the foreground is a twin cylinder hydraulic power pump with fast and loose pulleys in the centre and a drive belt heading down the middle to the Crossley horizontal single cylinder engine at the back. This plant has been updated but I know not how.

Traffic lights for the swing bridge to Wigg Island
The derelict building was, no doubt, some form of "flight control" in the canal's busier days

The Manchester Ship Canal looking West from Old Quay Swing Bridge towards the Runcorn-Widnes Bridge. The sand banks of the river Mersey at low tide lie alongside to the right and the church of St Mary's is visible at the water's edge in Widnes.

Manchester Ship Canal, lock gate facility.
The big shed was the MSC Co's gate repair shed. The gates are now metal but were originally Greenheart timber and the shed contained monstrous woodworking kit. The gates were then slid onto this device here that would tip them in to a vertical position to be picked up by the 250 ton crane that could get end on to this structure. The shed is level but the satellite shows that some of the tilting device remains in situ.
