A 'Duchess' (or 'Coronation') Pacific on an Up Perth express near Weaver Junction
View northward, towards Warrington, Preston and Carlisle on the West Coast Main Line, just south of the flying junction with the main line from Liverpool which had been electrified three months before. The 12.15 Perth - Euston express is headed by No. 46229 'Duchess of Hamilton', a 'Duchess' that was built streamlined in 9/38, sent to the USA (as No. 6220 'Coronation' 1939-42), reverted to No. 6229, was un-streamlined in 1/48, acquired a normal smoke-box in 2/57 and was withdrawn in 2/64. She was preserved and for many years worked 'Heritage' Specials as well as being on display at various sites. In 2009 she was streamlined again and since then has been a static exhibit at the National Railway Museum at York, back in her original red livery.
