Golborne Colliery
Closed 1989. Grid reference from Owen Ashmore (1982), The Industrial Archaeology of North West England. Visit was to see a compressed air winch in the stock yard and we literally helped ourselves. I'm not sure we were even challenged. Of course some of the current generation of urban explorers make themselves inconspicuous with hi-vis and hard hats.

Golborne Colliery
Long gone. Just to the left of the heapstead building are two grey blocks on the horizon. They look like tower winder houses and I suspect that is Parkside Colliery, also gone. Indeed, review of the overview confirms my suspicion. That can only be Parkside to the south. Parkside was at Newton-le-Willows and the satellite shows a scar where it was, right next to the M6 and on its west side. I did visit Parkside to photograph a winch but only time will tell whether I have any exterior views.

Compressed air winch Golborne Colliery
Could equally have run on steam. The sort of task it would be used on would be for changing the winding ropes on the main winders. There were also other wire ropes around shafts such as balance ropes and guide ropes. This was one of our prime objectives for the day.
