A plaque on this side of the building explains that it was built in 1902 "as a recreation and reading room for the townspeople." Since then it has also served as a fire station and as the headquarters of the British Legion. A blue plaque on the other face of the building says that a Welcome Club for officers of the American Third Army was opened in this building by General George Patten on 25th April 1944.
