Swan with Two Nicks, Little Bollington
Known in 1745/6 as the Tenement no.: 17, the Swan Alehouse, it remained the Swan until at least 1910. By 1929 it had become the Swan with Two Nicks. Nobody seems to know why or exactly when.
In the 12th Century all unmarked swans were decreed to belong to the crown and from the 15th the practice of swan upping to ring the birds began on the Thames. On the Thames ownership of swans is shared equally among the Crown, the Vintners' Company and the Dyers' Company. Originally dyers marked their swans with one nick on the beak. The vintners marked with two nicks.
The pub is near the River Bollin where swans are found. Who was nicking the swans?

Public House with restaurant
At Little Bollington: The swan is a Royal bird in England: any having no known owner belong to the Crown. Formerly, no one was permitted to own a swan except by Royal licence. For more than three centuries, two of the London Guilds - the Dyers Company and the Vintners Company - have shared ownership of Thames swans. Every year representatives of these companies, and the Crown, go up the river by boat to round up the young swans and mark them by one or two ‘nicks’ in their bills … hence the origin of the pub sign (and also of ‘swan upping’).
