The seventeenth century Buttermarket was in the middle of Old Market Place until about 1850. Over the Buttermarket was the courtroom with a lock-up at the side until 1838. There were also a stocks and a whipping post. Public floggings, eg for stealing, took place here until the early 19th century. As well as the replica market cross (Image]), the Market Place Traders erected the replica, stocks and whipping post in 1990. The lintel from the Police Lock-ups of 1838 in George Street, which were closed in 1866, was incorporated into the stocks’ seat. Old Market Place in Altrincham on a sunny autumn afternoon.

Construction is under way on the new multi-storey car park as part of the rebuilding of the area between George Street and Stamford New Road. Note the very prominent advertisement for a brand of cigarettes! Nearly forty-five years on (2021) José (for hair and beauty) on the left is still trading, although the premises themselves have been rebuilt.

The cross is a replica (erected in 1990) of the original market cross which stood here, in front of the seventeenth century Buttermarket. The "Orange Tree", behind the cross, and some of the adjacent buildings have fragments of 16th and 17th century buildings. The Orange Tree, which has been a pub only since the 1880’s, consists of two ancient timber buildings which had an alley on the left and has wattle and daub remains in a back room.
