Stamford Street, Altrincham 1977
Construction is under way on the new multi-storey car park as part of the rebuilding of the area between George Street and Stamford New Road. Note the very prominent advertisement for a brand of cigarettes! Nearly forty-five years on (2021) José (for hair and beauty) on the left is still trading, although the premises themselves have been rebuilt.

The Old Roebuck
Originally built a short distance away behind the Old Market Tavern, the pub was moved to its current position circa 1837 to commemorate the accession of Queen Victoria when Well Street was renamed Queen Street. It is currently owned by the Ei Group (formerly Enterprise Inns). Image

Old Market Place, Stocks and Whipping Post
The seventeenth century Buttermarket was in the middle of Old Market Place until about 1850. Over the Buttermarket was the courtroom with a lock-up at the side until 1838. There were also a stocks and a whipping post. Public floggings, eg for stealing, took place here until the early 19th century. As well as the replica market cross (Image]), the Market Place Traders erected the replica, stocks and whipping post in 1990. The lintel from the Police Lock-ups of 1838 in George Street, which were closed in 1866, was incorporated into the stocks’ seat. Kingsway, Altrincham
One of the many building being demolished as part of the redevelopment of the Stamford Quarter of Altrincham in the mid 1970s. Note the poor health and safety precautions - a mother and child have been able to walk through the demolition site (as has the photographer).
