Randall's Arch
This sandstone archway was originally constructed in the 1780's as an imposing entrance to Haydock Lodge, the home of the Legh family, a mile away from its present site. It was re-erected here in 1840 as a centrepiece of the towns' marketplace and Newton Nursery which lay behind. In 1880 John Randall was appointed as manager and went on to successfully develop the rundown nursery after the death of Mr Hilton, the original proprietor. In 1925 his son Sidney took over the running of the business following the death of his mother and the nursery finally closed after 70 years. In 2001 it became the entrance to Ariete Italian Bar And Restaurant.
