Earlestown Station ? 1966
One of the small number of triangular stations on the national network. The layout dates back to the 1830s when the Grand Junction Railway from Birmingham was opened, connecting here with the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The triangular layout allowed trains from Birmingham to run through to either Liverpool or Manchester.
This view shows the eastern side of the triangle with a Standard Class 9 2-10-0 locomotive heading eastwards to join the L&M beyond the signal box.
