The Parish Church of Newton-in-Makerfield, Emmanuel, Wargrave
Emmanuel Church, at Wargrave, was built in 1841 on a piece of land granted by Thomas Legh "for the erection of a church, schools, and rectory" in the previous year. The church is a stone building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, west porch and a small tower with spire over the western entrance.
It is probable that the church was built to serve the workers at the settlement around the nearby Vulcan Works as, at that time, the nearest church was at Winwick and, apart from the foundry, there were only a few straggling cottages and farms between Wargrave and the Common at Earlestown (http://newton-le-willows.com/history/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1015 Newton-le-Willows History Forum).
