Rainford Junction
Rainford railway station is situated to the north of the village of Rainford in Merseyside. It was first opened in 1858 as Rainford Junction at the junction of the Liverpool and Bury Railway, the East Lancashire Railway's Skelmersdale Branch and the St. Helens Railway, replacing an earlier station (1848) called Rainford. The L&YR route was later upgraded to become its main line between Liverpool and Manchester. Through trains from Liverpool Exchange to Bolton via Wigan continued until the Liverpool station’s closure in 1977 after which, the line was severed at Kirkby, with through passengers having to change between diesel and electric services there to continue their journeys. The station is now served by hourly trains to Kirkby (for connections to Liverpool Central) and to Manchester Victoria. The station was officially renamed simply “Rainford” in 1973 but there are still signs directing you to “Rainford Junction” (eg https://media.geograph.org.uk/files/6974ce5ac660610b44d9b9fed0ff9548/Rainford_Junction_sign.jpg - Google Streetview).

Rainford (Junction) railway station, Lancashire
Opened in 1858 by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway on what became the line from Liverpool Exchange to Manchester Victoria via Wigan. When this image was taken, passengers from Liverpool to Wigan by this line needed to change trains at Kirkby. View south west towards Kirkby and Liverpool. This was once a three-way junction with platforms curving round towards Ormskirk (right) and St Helens (left).
