Former Capitol Cinema and YMCA, Duke Street
The Capitol Cinema opened in 1929 on a prominent corner site at North Road and Duke Street and was closed by ABC on 9th December 1978. The building was then converted into a sports centre and at present is a gymnasium.
The redbrick building facing is the YMCA Building opened by Earl of Aberdeen in 1903. In the middle of the roundabout is the Miners Monument depicting three members of the once thriving St Helens mining community, a pick-swinging miner, a 'pit-brow lass' and a young pit lad. The figures are set against a pillar of coal and mounted on a piece of local stone.
