Beecham's Patented Pills
An important St Helens company was the world famous Beecham's Pills. Thomas Beecham, born in Oxfordshire in 1820, began selling his pills and cures as a travelling salesman in the 1840s. Moving first to Liverpool and then Wigan, Thomas bought property in Westfield Street St Helen's in order to build a factory which cost around £30,000 and opened in 1877. The factory and its clock tower became a landmark on the St Helens skyline. The building has many intricate terracotta carvings around the exterior, including the face of its founder above the door! The factory closed in 1998 and has now become part of St Helens College.

Former Capitol Cinema and YMCA, Duke Street
The Capitol Cinema opened in 1929 on a prominent corner site at North Road and Duke Street and was closed by ABC on 9th December 1978. The building was then converted into a sports centre and at present is a gymnasium. The redbrick building facing is the YMCA Building opened by Earl of Aberdeen in 1903. In the middle of the roundabout is the Miners Monument depicting three members of the once thriving St Helens mining community, a pick-swinging miner, a 'pit-brow lass' and a young pit lad. The figures are set against a pillar of coal and mounted on a piece of local stone.
