St Helens Canal, The Hotties
The building across the canal dates from 1883. It was a tank house at the former Crown Glass Works. It is a Grade II* listed building (Historic England List Entry Number: 1075879 https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1075879 ); dating from 1883.
This area of the canal became known as "the Hotties" because water from the canal was used to cool glass in its manufacturing process, and was returned to the canal through sprays issuing from the pipework on the left. This warmed the water and caused clouds of steam as it met the cooler air.
