Royal Holloway College
The west facade of this outstanding example of Victorian building. The college was commissioned by Thomas Holloway who had made a fortune selling patent medicines, to educate young ladies. The architect was William Crossland, a pupil of Sir George Gilbert Scott. The design was inspired by the Chateau de Chambord in the Loire Valley. The building took 6 years and £70,000 to complete. It was opened in 1886 by Queen Victoria who bestowed the Royal title on the college.

Royal Holloway College
Royal Holloway College was founded in 1879 by Thomas Holloway as a women's college, although it became fully co-educational in 1965 and merged with Bedford College four years after this photograph was taken. It has always offered the opportunity to gain a University of London degree while living in a semi-rural setting. The exuberant architecture, modelled on a French chateau and now grade I listed, is mirrored by the nearby Holloway Sanatorium - an institution originally established for the treatment of the insane; students liked to say that it was impossible to tell the two apart.
