Thorpe's church is not mentioned in the Domesday Book. It probably dates from the 1300s but the brick tower is 16th Century.

Cast-iron memorial, St Mary's churchyard, Thorpe
Cast-iron 'headstones' aren't particularly rare, but at Thorpe there are a good number of them, arranged along the north-east wall of the churchyard. The name on this one is George Rockall, 'Late of HMS Trafalgar, R.N.' - and the date, December 1896. The other cast-iron markers seemed to date from the 1890's and early 1900's. I've never before met the surname Rockall, but you could hardly find a more nautical name.

Eighteenth century headstone, St Mary's churchyard, Thorpe
A simple but bold design, with big, bold lettering. If I'm right, the wording reads as follows: Here Lies the Body of Mavrice Bayley Juner who Departed ys life July ye 6th 1779 Aged 28 years 'Juner' must - I think - be a rustic spelling of 'junior'. From a quick look at other stones nearby, it seems that the Bayley family used the name 'Maurice' in three successive generations - though the spelling (as recorded by the mason) varied, appearing as Maurice, Mavrice and Moreis.
