Mannion Court, South Bank
In 2003 it was reported that this block of flats would have to be demolished because of "teenage yobs terrorising tenants". Two years later it is still here with all ground floor windows boarded up.

This section of Middlesbrough Road has been completely obliterated by the construction of the current A66.

Diversion along Puddler's Road
Looking back along a dreary stretch of road through an industrial area which is part of the diversion of the Teesdale Way and England Coast Path. The diversion was necessitated by the closure of a 2 km section of the Black Path since November 2015 during the decommissioning of the old Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI) site (see
Image). The diversion adds a further 2 km to the total length of the path.

Crossroads, South Bank ? 1971
Middlesbrough Road at Normanby Road. Today, this bit of Middlesbrough Road effectively no longer exists as a result of its replacement by the modern A66 https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/145693 . All the buildings on the right hand side have been demolished. On the left the double doors are the entrance to the local Post Office and Savings Bank, built into what had been the Workers' Institute.
The view was taken on the last day of operation of trolleybuses on Teesside. Trolleybus T291 was one of 5 bought second-hand from Reading in 1969 to shore up the ageing fleet. It is a Sunbeam F4A with Burlingham bodywork, new in 1961.

Empty house, Redcar Road
There are a number of boarded-up houses in the area, but on this street someone has had the idea to brighten them up a bit, in a number of different designs.
Update: This block was demolished in April 2008.

Normanby Road, South Bank ? 1968
Of particular interest is the large local Co-operative store on the left, so typical of industrial areas like this. The building still exists although now divided up into separate retail units, no longer a Co-op.
The bus is no.33 in the Teesside Railless Transport Board (TRTB) fleet. It is a Leyland Leopard with bodywork by Roe, new in 1965. The TRTB was jointly owned by the Middlesbrough and Eston councils, initially as a trolleybus service serving the local steel industry, which was later supplemented by bus services.
