The Old River Tees
The old course of the River Tees is still well defined as it does a large meander around what is now Teesside Retail Park. As can be seen the creek is tidal and must have been a lot wider. It was cut off when the river was straightened with the digging of the Old Cut in the nineteenth century. The cut was only 220 yards but it saved the sailing vessels negotiating the large loop around Mandale Bottoms. Just upstream of here Stainsby Beck flows into the creek which has been channelled during the construction of the A19 seen beyond.
