Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station
An advanced gas-cooled reactor, construction started in 1969 and was completed in 1985. Just shows how long these things take to build, even considering the more benign environment that existed in those days. Originally expected to close in 2009, its life has now been extended to 2024. Maximum output is 1,320 MW which is between 2 and 3% of the UK's total electricity needs. Contrast and compare with Britain's windfarms which in 2013, IN TOTAL, produced only some 9% of the country's power needs.
