Turton Cottages, Roxby
Dated 1858. The building comprises two ranges of cottages connected by this central block with an elaborate horseshoe shaped door for access to the rear. The estate of Roxby was brought from the Boyntons by J. Turton, Esq., M.D., physician to George III, who died in 1806 without issue. His estates were bequeathed to Edmund Peters, who thereupon assumed the name and arms of Turton. The Turton family seat was at Upsall Castle near Thirsk (Image) where there is an almost identical set of cottages but with a date of 1859.

The 1901 Census suggests that this was the home of several members of the Welford family, descended from Catholic recusants who settled in North Yorkshire to escape persecution by Protestants. Occupations of residents included a stone mason, blacksmith, joiner carpenter and shoemaker.
