Terraced houses at Cowbar
Similar viewpoint to Image
Cowbar Lane at the left hand end of the terrace runs very close to the cliff edge and the route further west has already had to be moved due to serious landslide of the cliffs into the sea in 2005.

Terrace Houses, Cowbar
One of a pair of terraces on the cliff top above and west of Staithes. These terraces are built in the local sandstone under Welsh slate roofs and were probably built to house workers in the nearby ironstone mining industry.

Staithes Beck, Staithes
The flow of this tidal beck changes as you look at it. One minute it is quickly flowing to the sea and the next it is quickly flowing upstream with the swell. Boats have to be tied up to more than one mooring to counteract this changing movement.

Cowbar near Staithes
The village seems increasingly threatened by cliff erosion, though just below the houses looks reasonably safe for the time being.
At sea, a drilling rig is preparing to leave the area after working in connection with Boulby Mine which extends far out to sea.
It is possible an attempt has been made to seal off a flooded section but local opinion [on what it was doing] is divided and the activity hasn't been much reported.

Cliffs at Cowbar
Near vertical cliffs of Jurassic age rocks at Cowbar. The calls of Kittiwakes fill the air here as they find the ledges on this shaded cliff ideal for nesting. To the right are the terraced cottages of Cowbar, separated from the cliff edge by a road, a strip of vegetation and not much else.
