Inside MIMA
Inside the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, opened in 2007 and a good art space although, in my view, not getting the top quality of touring exhibitions that mean people will travel to see what's on - we go every 6 months or so and every time it seems to be quieter, not good news in the longer term for a pretty ambitious gallery

HA[SOFT]RD, MIMA
The "Untitled (2010) Alliance", the bizarre sculpture comprising two aero engines Image standing outside MIMA has now been replaced by a sound installation entitled HA[SOFT]RD by Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva. Moving between the panels activates the sound piece which plays voices and sounds evocative of Teesside's industrial past. The work bears some comparison with the "Shetland Receivers" Image

Although the Sadler family originated in the Black Country, Samuel Sadler was to become associated with Teesside where he founded a chemicals business - the basis for this district's principal industry. He also served as MP for Middlesbrough.
