Woodside, Brotton
Double-fronted houses which look at first glance like a terrace, but are in fact semis. Were they built for mining families?

The blind valley of New Hill Gill
Although a small stream, New Hill Gill has cut a deep and steep sided valley, only to disappear underground 150m downstream of where the public footpath crosses it. Beyond is flat ground at the same level as the photographer, before a stream appears to form a valley in the same line another 200m NNW. Whether this is a natural sink or culverted under some sort of land fill is unclear, but the underlying rock is the Whitby Mudstone Formation. Whilst this is a mudstone "with limestone concretions" it is not really the sort of rock one would associate with karst scenery, so a natural course underground seems unlikely.
