Sir Humphry Davy & The Market House
The statue of Sir Humphry stands in front of the imposing Market House (now owned by Lloyds TSB) at the top of the Penzance's main street Market Jew Street. Nearby is a house on which a commemorative plaque claims the location as the site of his birth
Davy was one of Britain’s most notable scientists also an inventor. He is best remembered for his discoveries of several alkali metals, as well as contributing to the discovery of the elemental nature of chlorine and iodine. In 1815 he invented the famous Davy lamp, which allowed miners to work safely in the presence of flammable gases.

Sir Humphry Davy
The statue was erected in 1872 to Penzance's most famous son. Davy was born here in 1778 and is known for his work on the miners' safety lamp, but he was a brilliant scientist in many fields. It was he who discovered the pain relieving effects of nitrous oxide. By 24 he was a professor of chemistry at the Royal Institution. He discovered 6 new elements including potassium and sodium. He died in 1829. The market hall behind bears the date 1837
