Robinson's Shaft - South Crofty
A view of the Harvey's of Hayle crab winch (geared sideways); used for over 100 years and later converted to compressed air when the steam raising boilers went. This winch setup was used for hauling machinery down the shaft and rope changing. I think this engine spent some time roofless but has now been conserved. Image] The connecting between the steam engine and the drum is called a worm drive.

Robinson's Shaft, South Crofty Mine.
This is now closed. The National Trust owns the 1854 Cornish beam engine in the tall building with the chimney. The beam can be seen projecting in to the modern head gear. This is one of the few Cornish engines in situ in Cornwall. The others are at East Pool (x2), Levant (rotative), Goonvean (derelict) and Parkandillick. There is one on display at Poldark and the Carpalla engine is in store at Wroughton.

Robinson's Shaft - South Crofty
A mid 1960s 330HP double drum electric winder; this room was roofless for a while. The winder ceased in 1996. The caged item is an overwind protector.

Robinson's Shaft - driving position
A view of the driving position, used for adjustments. These engines were workhorses, pumping mines for decades.

Heartlands - Tin Ingot
This is a nice find. Resurrected from a Cornish shipwreck it's an ingot of Cornish tin. It was produced this size by law to reduce smuggling. Cornwall has the image of being a tin mining county; true it did mine it but more copper was produced by tonnage.
