The Home of Safety Fuse
This derelict factory at Tuckingmills is where William Bickford first manufactured his invention, safety fuse in 1831. Black powder was used to blast away rocks in mines and the fuses used to ignite the powder were extremely unreliable. Bickford invented a way of winding rope around a core of black powder to produce a fuse which burned reliably. This invention has saved the lives of many miners.
