Leeds Shaft, Great Work Mine
This engine house is the only remnant of the buildings of the Great Work Mine on the Godolphin Estate. The engine house, built 1829, was named after the Duke of Leeds, who lived nearby at Godolphin House. The shaft, in the foreground covered by metal gratings, is 1000 feet deep.

Great Work Mine
Once one of the largest tin mines in Cornwall, employing over 3000 people in the late 16th century. It eventually ceased working in the mid 20th century. This is the Leeds Shaft, the main shaft for the mine, named after the Duke of Leeds into whose ownership the mine transferred from the Godolphin family in 1785. Both the chimney and the engine house are grade II listed - see www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1142269 and www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1328328. Both date from around 1829, with the engine house being built to house a 60-inch cylinder steam-pumping engine made by Harvey's of Hayle.

The top of the bob wall of the engine house at Great Work Mine
This wall supported the reciprocating beam (known in Cornish mining as a bob) which transmitted the reciprocating motion of the piston to the pump rods in the adjacent shaft.

Leeds' Shaft engine house - Great work Mine
This was built in 1835 for a 60" pumping engine by Harvey & Co of Hayle. This had a major overhaul in the 1860s and worked until 1873. The mine had a final reworking from 1927 to 1937 when the shaft was enlarged and an electric hoist installed. At this time the engine house was cut down and a flat roof fitted. The house was conserved in 2005 and is now National Trust property. This is the shaft end with the braced bob wall in front of the still open shaft. The shaft is protected by a substantial metal grating.
