Helston from the ornamental lake
Helston was originally a port town at the head of the estuary of the River Cober. The river started to silt up in the 13th century and with the formation of Loe Bar across the estuary mouth, all port activity ceased. Helston was a "coinage town" where tin ingots were assayed and stamped and a duty paid to the Duke of Cornwall (usually the heir to the throne).

The Humphrey Millet Grylls Monument, Helston
This granite monument at the foot of Coinagehall Street was erected in 1834 in memory of Humphrey Millet Grylls, a local banker and solicitor, who donated funds that kept the Wheal Vor copper mine in production, thus saving 1,200 jobs. Closure of the mine would have been devastating for the town's economy. It is said that Grylls' funeral procession was two miles long when he died at the age of 45.
