The Truro Coinage Hall
The Coinage Hall is an imposing Victorian building which was built on the site of the 14th century Coinage Hall established when Truro became a stannary town where smelted tin was assayed before being sold and exported. Truro lost its status as a stannary town in 1838 and the hall has been used for different purposes, including banking. Today the Coinage Hall is home to Pizza Express, on the ground floor, and tea rooms, upstairs.

Truro War Memorial
The War Memorial has stood in Boscawen Street, outside Coinage Hall (now Pizza Express and Charlotte’s Tea House), since 1922. Most War memorials are rather sombre, but Truro’s is certainly eye catching with a soldier holding his hat in the air.

Plaques on Truro War Memorial
Although the memorial is primarily one for those who gave their lives in WWI & WWII, it also bears the names of Olaf Schmid, who died in Afghanistan in 2009, and Andrew Palmer, who perished on HMS Ardent in the Falklands in 1982. The floral tribute is in respect of the anniversary of the latter, on 21 May. Staff Sergeant Olaf 'Oz' Schmid was a locally-born bomb disposal expert who lost his life to an IED (improvised explosive device) in Afghanistan on 31 October 2009. He was posthumously awarded the George Cross, second only to the Victoria Cross.
