Doctor's Cottage

Halliggye Fogou
One of the largest and best preserved of these fogou (curious underground passages) this one originally passed under the rampart of a defended Iron Age settlement. The passage is up to 1.9m high with a corbelled roof and heavy stone lintels and jambs, 54 feet long and built around 1000BC.

Halliggye Fogou
Entrance to the fogou at Halliggye on the Trelowarren estate, a complex of underground passages dating from the 4th or 5th Century BC, the largest and best preserved example of this type of feature unique to West Cornwall. Entrance to Halliggye Fogou
A fogou is a middle iron age underground passage/chambers, which only occur in Cornwall. They were built underneath settlements but the purpose is unknown - could be for refuge, storage or ceremonial. This one is apparently a great example, more extensive than most and is open to the public - when the horseshoe bats aren't hibernating. Well worth a visit, but you will need a torch.
