Voyage over life's sea
A mosaic in the wall of Grenville House proclaims some of the experiences available to the children who come here. The building was originally built as an orphanage in 1863 by William Gibbs. The dangerous and occasionally deadly work of the fishermen left sons without fathers, and the institution helped many boys of lost seamen up until 1988. However, changes and social provisions had brought about its closure. But the place and the opportunity to keep it going were too good to dispose of, so the Grenville House Outdoor Education Centre took over in 1990.
