Palm trees, Pampas Grass, Penwill Way, Clennon Valley
Torbay Palm Trees are widely planted by residents and public authorities alike in South Devon. The mild climate allows them to thrive. Every so often a severe winter cuts them down - they can't bear to have frozen snow trapped in their leaves. If the top appears to have been killed off, the normal practice is to wait to see if it is completely dead. Often it is not. However, if it is, this is cut down and almost always the plant springs up from new shoots at the base. Also in this picture is pampas grass. This appears to be exceptionally hardy and unaffected by frost. In France it is perceived by many as an invasive plant. Anyone who has tried to uproot or kill off a well established plant will be able to attest to its tenacious powers, even to the extent of surviving successive bonfires. Scots Pine is also to be seen lower down at the junction.

Paignton Carriage Sidings looking to Goodrington Station
This is a view from the Paignton Carriage sidings and looking towards the Goodrington sidings and railway station. The closest track is operated by the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway. In the distance can be seen the road bridge crossing the railway and leading to Goodrington Sands beach. The hotel that stands here, on the site of a former military hospital, is the only place in England that the Emperor Napoleon ever set foot whilst visiting injured prisoners of war whilst he was held on board a ship in the bay awaiting his exile.

Paignton Carriage Sidings
In the foreground are the tracks from the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway whilst in the distance to the left are the carriage sidings. In the left foreground is a parked railway wagon on the PDSR track which terminates just in front of the shunting spur from the mainline sidings. There is only a very short space between the two!
