Ginkgo Tree, former South Devon College, School of Art
This ginkgo tree used to grow outside the School of Art building on the old College site. Ginkgos are unique trees. One survived near the epicentre of the nuclear explosion in Hiroshima and still exists today. The College site was built partly in the grounds of an old Arboretum. It is not known if this tree was part of the Arboretum, or if it still survives now that the College buildings have been demolished. In the Autumn each year, the tree gave a display of beautiful yellow leaves before they were shed. The leaves are also used as a herbal remedy and are reputed to stimulate the function of the human brain.

Magnolia, Torre Marine
The tree pronounced "dying" around 20 years ago mysteriously continues to flourish, in spite of having a new housing estate built around it. Indeed, the latest tranche of dwellings is called "Magnolia Square" in its honour - though one mustn't forget the fine Persian ironwood tree next to it. Both have survived from Eden Philpotts' arboretum and have outlasted the college that once surrounded them and threatened their existence. See also Image

Magnolia, Torre Marine
The tree shown a couple of weeks earlier in Image has reached its peak of display. Unfortunately, the buildings close to it on the west side are so high that they block the winter sun from most of the blooms.

Oakhill Road, Torquay
A stretch of road that has seen many changes in the last half century or so. These are new dwellings that form part of Torre Marine, on the site of South Devon College, much of which itself replaced earlier buildings.
