The 4x4 was being driven very, very slowly. It's August and Shaldon Regatta: the narrow village streets are choked with luxury vehicles.

Shaldon Conservative Club, Dagmar Street
There is a foundation stone, visible to the left of the bay window, inscribed 'This stone was laid by Col. L. Graeme, J.P. May 28th. 1914.' The sound emerging through the open door suggested a carousing club. It was an August evening during Shaldon Regatta.
