The Green, Shaldon, Devon
This large village green, split into two with one half as a bowling green, is surrounded by small Georgian or early Victorian cottages. These probably housed either the local fishermen or the workers at the thriving ship and boat building yards which existed then. At the Eastern end of the green stands the memorial to the local men that lost their lives in the 1914-18 war.

Magnolia grandiflora in a Fore Street front garden
A majestic big shrub or small tree when allowed to develop its full height and habit. It does well in the southwest. The flowers are classic creamy-white magnolia flowers; the undersides of the leaves are felted rusty-brown (like some rhododendrons but with yellowy-green upper leaf surfaces where rhodies would more likely be dark green above).
