Bovey Tracey : Churchyard Cross
Cross-shaft incorporated into memorial. Probably medieval cross-shaft and later C19 memorial. Granite shaft tapered and chamfered. The upper part of the shaft, including the right arm and lower part of the head, is of closely similar granite but seems less weathered and may be C19. The top of the cross-head, again a separate piece of granite, may be medieval. The cross-base and the 3 octagonal steps on which it stands are C19, erected as a memorial to the Rev. Charles Courtenay (d.1894).

St Mary's Well, Bovey Tracey
The well is set into the front wall of the churchyard of St Peter, St Paul and St Thomas of Canterbury Church (which used to St Mary’s) in Bovey Tracey. There is a story concerning the well. Long ago a priest returned home one evening to find a visitor waiting for him. The priest and his wife shared their food with the visitor and offered shelter. The visitor blessed the couple and promising them good fortune, went to pray at the well saying ‘here is living water for yourself and the church’. From that day on the frogs which inhabited the well were gold coloured and water from the well was used for baptisms. There was no water and no golden frogs when I visited.

St Mary's Well, Bovey Tracey
Another view of
Image, actually built into the garden wall of Church Style Cottage. The basin is formed from a single block of granite, and the spout above is also of granite. The detailed description at http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-84485-granite-trough-and-recess-in-south-wall-o can offer no suggestion for the date.
